There are four members of staff in the Modern Languages department -

Aims

The aims of the Modern Languages Department are -

  • To enable pupils to communicate in the foreign language (French and Spanish);
  • To enable pupils to understand what is being said to them in the foreign language;
  • To enable pupils to make themselves understood in the foreign language;
  • To enable pupils to read in the foreign language;
  • To enable pupils to write basic ideas in the foreign language.
  • To prepare pupils for N.Q. examinations at National 4, National 5 and Higher levels

Objectives

The objectives of the Modern Languages Department are:

  • To enable pupils to listen to and understand authentic spoken language in situations which may be relevant to their needs or interests.
  • To enable pupils to speak the foreign language in order to communicate ideas which may be relevant to their needs or interests and to encourage them to develop and improve their accent and pronunciation when speaking in the foreign language.
  • To encourage and enable pupils to read and understand the written word in the foreign language by exposing them to passages of written language which are as far as possible authentic and which are of interest to them at their stage of development.
  • To enable pupils to write the foreign language correctly, starting with very basic ideas and progressing to more complex ideas and more difficult forms of language.
  • To help pupils to learn about the customs and civilisation of the countries and peoples concerned.
  • To provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation for pupils.
