Support for Learning

Teaching: Mrs P. Cormack  (PT Support For Learning)

ASN Classroom Assistants:

Ms K. Brodie, Mrs L. Davies,
Mrs S. Davies, Mrs J. McCafferty
Mrs L. Miller, Mrs A. Mitchell
Mrs C Oliver, Mrs. P. Prickett
Mrs M. Thompson, Mrs N. Ward

Five minute team briefings are held each morning at the start of period 1. Formal department meetings are held monthly. The day and period vary so that support is not regularly withdrawn from the same classes.

They are attended by all ASN staff and Mr B. Fowley (DHT). The minutes are taken by Mrs P. Cormack. An agenda pro forma is placed on the Department notice board every month and a copy sent to Mr Fowley. Staff are encouraged to add items to the agenda which they may wish raised.

The Support for Learning Department aims to promote practice which will help children to reach their full potential, and to work with colleagues to make this an important and constantly developing part of the school ethos within a Catholic framework.

We do this in a variety of ways -

  • by working with subject colleagues to differentiate the curriculum
  • by providing colleagues with relevant information about pupils with ASN
  • by working cooperatively within the classroom to deal with difficulties as they arise
  • by working with individual pupils or small groups
  • by keeping colleagues up to date with current thinking in supporting pupils

We believe that the best way to support pupils is by joint working, and by trying to promote a common approach. To do this we -

  • work closely with the SMT, Guidance Dept and primary colleagues in our associated schools
  • try to involve parents as much as possible both formally and informally
  • work closely with our support agencies, particularly the educational psychologist, but also staff from the Hearing Impairment Service, the English as an Additional Language Service, the School Nurse etc.
